Day 22, Moab, White Rim Trail

Another day exploring off the TAT.
Before I go any further though I would like to wish my lovely wife Jennie happy birthday. It is 7 September in New Zealand. Jen, I hope you have had a lovely day. You are awesome and just get better with age.

Today's riding was a lesson in sometimes too much of a good thing can be too much of a good thing!
I've always lived by the motto moderation in everything ( mostly anyway).
So the White Rim Trail. This is a fairly rugged jeep trail that runs through the Canyonlands national park south of Moab. Not surprisingly we rode through but mostly above canyons carved by the Colorado and Green rivers and thier tributaries. Epic and stark. Vertical cliffs from multiple mesas. It is certainly spectacular and almost scary in its ruggedness and remoteness. The trail winds through this, over rock and sand. Mostly we rode on the White Rim plateau but towards the end of the ride we rode along the Green River ( aptly named in a French mustard kind of way ). Then a spectacular switchback climb up on top of the Island in the sky, a huge Mesa with views forever.
The riding was fun and at times had beautiful flow in the sandy double track but there were a lot of rocky slabs that required concentration to avoid pinch flats. Eventually they took thier toll with the rugged riding leaving us pretty shagged. The trail is approximately 120 miles long, that's almost 200km, which is a long day of being hammered. Too much of a good thing but fantastic nevertheless. I'm off to find a beer and drink a toast to my marvellous Jennie.
