Day 25, TAT Day 7 Eureka, Nevada

So, firstly, today I missed the second birthday to happen in my family while I am away. I spent a lot of time thinking about Julius, who turned 8 today in New Zealand (10 sept).
Happy Birthday Jules. I hope Mom and Lucien spoilt you and that you got your favourite food for supper.

It was a strange day today. We started the day riding quite fun, cruisy ATV trails for a couple of hours over the hills west of Richfield. We knew we would be in the town of Kanosh late morning and so I was fully psyched for a coffee and odds were that Dave was as well.
Would you believe it but the entire town was in church, not a soul on the street and about 100 cars parked outside the church. We managed to get fuel via credit card off the machine and set off into the desert feeling slightly sulky.
Western Utah is simply not as cool as the mountainous eastern part and we spent most of the mid afternoon thundering along dead straight roads.
The only notable feature, apart from the general vasteness and starkness was crystal mountain (see pics) which is a white mountain in a small range of "normal" mountains. No idea why.
Did the obligatory pic and thundered off again to the Border Inn, which was supposed to be our overnight stop. It straddles the Nevada border with accomodation in wholesome Mormon Utah and a small casino and bar in less wholesome Nevada. It could be quirky but with stale cigarette smoke and a few sad people shoving coins into the pokie machines it just seemed a but depressing.
We decided we didn't want to stay and pushed through to the town of Eureka.
That was a spectacular ride with thunder and lightning all around. Really beautiful with streams of sunlight contrasting with the thunder storms against the mountains. We stayed dry until literally 2 miles from Eureka and then got totally drenched as we came into town. The Best Western Motel then extorted us as we had no choice but to dive for cover.
Still listening to the storm outside as I type.
